School playground design

Good school playground design starts with a brief, not a catalogue. Set the age group, the space and the budget below, and the planner shows which play zones fit and a realistic price band. Prices checked November 2026, before VAT. A guide, not a quote.

A tennis court is about 260 m². Pace it out: one long stride is roughly a metre.

Footprints include the impact area round each piece and room to walk between them. Our planning allowances from published council costs; a guide, not a design or a quote.

    How the planner works

Each age group has a list of zones in order of priority. The planner adds them one by one while the smallest sensible footprint and the lowest installed cost still fit your space and budget. Zones that do not fit are shown greyed out with the reason.

Footprints include the impact area round each piece and space to walk between zones. Costs are installed with surfacing, before VAT.

When it looks right, Use this as my brief copies your answers into the form at the foot of the page, so an installer starts from the same picture.

    Where these figures come from

Item costs from The Highland Council, new equipment prices (November 2021), which include supply, installation and surfacing; footprints are our own allowances including the BS EN 1176-1 impact area of at least 1.5 m round each piece. Building costs have risen since 2021, so expect quotes towards the upper end.

    Playground design questions

How do you design a school playground?

Start with who uses it and when: age groups, how many children at once, and what they do now. Map the space, sun, drainage and sightlines, then divide it into zones (active, imaginative, quiet) before choosing any equipment. Fix the budget early, because surfacing and groundworks can be a third of the cost.

How much space does a school playground need?

The DfE’s Building Bulletin 103 suggests hard informal and social space of 200 m² plus 1 m² per pupil, and soft informal and social space of 600 m² plus 2 m² per pupil. Equipment zones sit within those areas.

    How accurate is the planner?

It is a starting brief, not a design. Zone footprints and costs are our planning allowances built from a council’s published installed costs. An installer’s site visit will refine both.

Should children be involved in designing the playground?

Yes. School council surveys, drawings and a vote on two or three options give a better result and help with fundraising. Keep the safety and budget decisions with staff.

Do we need a landscape architect?

Not usually for equipment within an existing playground; most installers include design. For a whole-site redesign with levels, drainage and planting, an independent designer can help you tender fairly.

How do schools fund a new playground?

Usually a mix of school capital budget, PTA fundraising, local grants and trust or council programmes. The PE and sport premium cannot be used for capital items such as new equipment.

    Turn your plan into quotes

Three short steps: where the school is, what you have in mind, and how to reach you. It takes about two minutes.

This is a free matching service, not a play equipment installer. We tell you which installer we have found before they see your brief.
